The Beiheng Passage, covering a total length of approximately 19.1 kilometers, the passage is primarily aligned from the southwest to the northeast, serving as a key urban expressway connecting the districts of Changning, Putuo, Jing’an, Hongkou, and Yangpu. It is divided into two segments by Wenan Road. The western segment, spanning about 10.9 kilometers, officially opened to traffic in June 2021.
On August 2, 2024, after three years of construction, the eastern segment of the Beiheng Passage was officially opened, seamlessly connecting with the already operational western segment and extending the route by approximately 8.2 kilometers. The completion and opening of the main line of the eastern segment marks the full operation of the entire Beiheng Passage project. This new infrastructure enables direct access to the Hongqiao Hub in the west and facilitates travel to the Pudong New Area via the Zhoujiazui Road Tunnel in the east, thereby significantly improving traffic conditions along the route and alleviating regional traffic congestion.
The full completion of the Beiheng Passage creates a new rapid transit route linking areas along its path to the Hongqiao Hub, effectively serving the medium- to long-distance travel needs of residents in key northern regions. It plays a crucial role in connecting the two major airports, Hongqiao and Pudong, and supports the development of the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone.
Sansi LED supplied nearly 20,000 products for the Beiheng Passage, encompassing tunnel lighting fixtures and intelligent traffic guidance systems. These products feature advanced technologies such as reflective lighting, ceramic heat dissipation, and smart traffic solutions. After conducting comprehensive field surveys, Sansi LED tailored the lighting design to account for the tunnel's topography, vehicle speed, and lane requirements. Basic lighting was symmetrically installed on both sides of the tunnel, with fixture spacing optimized based on the tunnel’s width. Enhanced lighting was strategically positioned at the entrance, transition, and exit sections, using a combination of LED lights with varying wattages to ensure consistent and optimal illumination throughout the tunnel.
Notably, the XC series tunnel lights featuring Sansi LED’s reflective lighting technology were predominantly used in this project. These lights effectively address the challenge of balancing high transmittance with glare reduction—a common issue in traditional tunnel lighting. As a result, Sansi LED create a high-quality, comfortable, and energy-efficient lighting environment for urban tunnels. Given the close spacing of lights in urban tunnels, glare suppression is crucial, making indirect lighting an ideal solution. This method reduces the lateral light distribution angle, minimizing light projection onto the tunnel ceiling. By uniformly scattering the inclined LED light across the road surface, consistent brightness is achieved. The high efficiency and soft, glare-free illumination enhance both visibility and comfort. This advanced technology not only improves safety for tunnel traffic but also reduces the number of lighting fixtures needed, thereby lowering operational costs.
Additionally, Sansi provided LED tunnel lights for the Zhoujiazui River Crossing Tunnel, which connects with the Beiheng Passage, enabling Pudong residents to quickly reach the Hongqiao Hub, as well as for the Beizhai Road Tunnel. These lights include reflective tunnel lights with unique light distribution and structural designs, along with ceramic heat dissipation tunnel lights, creating a healthy and comfortable tunnel lighting environment that ensures travel safety.
To date, leveraging its research, development, and customization capabilities, Sansi has successfully implemented over 2,500 tunnel lighting projects across China. The company is committed to creating safe travel environments through its tunnel lighting solutions, contributing to the development of China’s highway infrastructure.
